What exactly is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of 60 organic compounds derived from the hemp and cannabis plants. Unlike cannabis, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it has no effect on the mind or mental processes and therefore does not influence our behaviour or perception of reality.

The substance responsible for making you high when you smoke cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, another cannabinoid of the hundreds found in hemp. THC is absent, or very low, in CBD oil.

Research suggests that trace amounts of THC should be present in CBD oil in order to maximise its effects. CBD and THC have been shown to work synergistically to enhance each other’s therapeutic benefits.

How does it work?

The therapeutic benefits of CBD are all down to your very own endocannabinoid system, a network of neurotransmitters that controls endocrine function, hormonal balance and the central nervous system inside your body. The endocannabinoid system plays a part regulating many basic functions of the human body, including appetite and metabolism, sleep, pain, mood, immunity, inflammation, digestion, neuroprotection and memory, and is also involved in response to illness.

But note the name of this system: that’s right – it’s named after cannabis! And for a very important reason; the endocannabinoid system inside your body contains biological cannabis-like substances called endocannabinoids.

While your body can function by itself entirely independently of supplemented cannabinoids, in our stress promoting modern environment, our bodies can often use a little extra help to maintain homeostasis from external sources to do their job of staying in optimal health.

Because the structure of endocannabinoids is so similar to that of cannabinoids, our receptors can receive exogenous cannabinoids and welcome them as extra helping hands in helping to keep our physical and psychological states tip top. This is likely to be the magic key to the myriad benefits of CBD.

As science begins to unravel the facts on the health benefits of CBD, one thing is for sure, cannabis’s previously questionable reputation as a teenage intoxicant is being overthrown by its new and rightful status as a powerful, healing plant.
